February 24-28, 2020.   Conference on Mathematics of complex systems in biology and medicine

Scope

This conference aims to bring together researchers from different mathematical backgrounds and biologists or biophysicists studying complex systems arising in biology and medicine. The idea is to discuss new perspectives at the intersection between these different approaches. Starting from a problem from biology, we are interested in the whole mathematical process leading to a better understanding of the biological issues through modeling. In particular, interpreting the biological data, designing a deterministic or probabilistic model, calibrating the model from the experimental data, studying the mathematical properties of the model, obtaining accurate approximations, and giving a biological interpretation of the results. Statistical approaches, used to interpret large sets of experimental data can then be combined with the accurate deterministic or stochastic modeling of the phenomenon under consideration to reach a deeper level of understanding. These accurate models can be simplified into toy models that can be analysed mathematically. In addition, a numerical treatment of the model can also help provide deeper understanding or further insight into the analysis of the original problem. During the week, this conference will consider the following central questions:

  • How to calibrate the model from the experimental data?
  • How to describe the emergence of a pattern from a complex systems?
  • Can we predict the macroscopic behavior of a system from laws at the microscopic level? Can we interpret the microscopic behaviour from the observations at the macroscopic level?
  • What is the long time behaviour of the system? Does the system relax toward an equilibrium, or does it synchronize?

These questions are of real interest for the biology and medical communities. A portion of the speakers work directly in the biology or biophysics community and the other speakers are mathematicians that have a strong connection with biologists and medical doctors. During this week, discussion will be centered around mathematical elds that include topics such as systems of PDEs, integro-di erential equations, systems of stochastic di erential equations, inverse problems, and statistics. Applications to medicine, pharmacology and biophysics will be highlighted.
